What to Prepare Before Your Trip
Documents, mobile data, money, health items and a realistic packing list for first-time visitors. 🇰🇷🧳
A good trip to South Korea starts with the things that are difficult to fix after boarding: entry permission, a working phone, a payment backup and essential medicine. This guide focuses on those priorities first, then covers the items that make daily travel easier.
Do not rely on a social-media checklist. Check the Korean Visa Portal, the official K-ETA website and your nearest Korean embassy or consulate before paying for non-refundable travel.
1. Entry documents: check these first

K-ETA and e-Arrival Card: the simple version
- As checked on August 18, 2026, the temporary K-ETA exemption for the countries and regions already covered by the program is extended through December 31, 2026 (KST).
- An exempt traveler may still apply for K-ETA and pay the application fee if they want K-ETA benefits, including not submitting an arrival card.
- A traveler without a valid K-ETA may need an arrival declaration. The official e-Arrival Card is free; use only e-arrivalcard.go.kr.
- Valid K-ETA holders, registered foreign residents and certain other categories are exempt from the arrival declaration. Use the site's navigator because exceptions matter.
2. Documents to save offline

☑ Hotel confirmation with the address in English and Korean
☑ Travel insurance policy and emergency contact
☑ Prescriptions and a doctor's letter for important medication
☑ Copies stored in a secure cloud account and one trusted person's contact details
Keep the passport itself in a secure place, but carry it when an original document is required—for example, some tax-refund purchases, age checks or official procedures. A phone photo is useful as a backup but is not a replacement for the original.
3. Phone, internet and essential apps
Reliable data is close to essential in Korea because navigation, translation, train bookings and taxi pickup details are commonly handled on a phone.
- eSIM, SIM or roaming: compare your carrier's roaming plan with Korean prepaid options. Confirm that your phone is unlocked and supports the chosen eSIM bands before purchase.
- Maps: install NAVER Map or KakaoMap. Their local place data and public-transport directions are usually more useful in Korea than relying on one global map app alone.
- Translation: install Papago and download any available offline language data.
- Transport: install KorailTalk if using KTX, and a visitor-friendly taxi app such as k.ride. Check app payment support before arrival.
- Safety: save 112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance, and 1330 for the Korea Travel Helpline.
4. Money and payment backup
An internationally enabled Visa, Mastercard or other widely accepted card. Tell your bank about travel if required and know your PIN.
A second card stored separately plus a modest amount of Korean won for markets, small shops and transit-card top-ups.
Cards are widely accepted, but not every foreign card works at every unattended machine or online checkout. Buy a Tmoney or EZL transit card after arrival and keep some cash for loading it. Do not carry your entire travel budget in one wallet.
5. Power, clothing and practical packing
Korea uses 220 V, 60 Hz electricity and outlets with two round holes. Pack a Type C/F-compatible adapter and check that chargers say 100–240 V before plugging them in.

Seasonal reality check
- Spring: bring layers; mornings and evenings can be cool. Check air-quality and weather forecasts.
- Summer: expect heat, humidity and rain. Pack breathable clothing, sun protection and a compact umbrella.
- Autumn: layers remain useful, especially in mountains and after sunset.
- Winter: pack a proper insulated coat, gloves and shoes with grip; indoor heating can feel very warm.
6. Medicine, food and customs
- Keep medicine in original packaging and bring supporting documents. Controlled or narcotic ingredients may require advance approval; check with Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and your Korean embassy.
- Declare restricted agricultural, animal and plant products. When unsure, use the red customs channel or ask an officer rather than hiding an item.
- Cash or equivalent payment instruments exceeding USD 10,000 in total must be declared on arrival.
- Check the airline's current rules for lithium batteries, liquids and smart luggage separately from Korea's entry rules.
7. The 24-hour-before-departure checklist

☑ Mobile data plan installed but activated at the correct time
